Mr Herrmann's new theory certainly provides food for thought. It looks back to Pythagorean philosophy and, still further back, to the observation of the movements of celestial bodies. Decoding designs according to their geometric relationships provides a completely different way of looking at rugs.

'Researching does not actually mean collecting knowledge but juggling with the unknown and dancing with the not-knowing' said Indian mathematician Arun Netravali in an interview in 1991. Applying these ideas, in diametric contrast to western methods of scientific research, led off the usual path trodden to explain phenomena in carpet art, to its re-examination, and finally to logical, plausible explanations within the natural sciences. From the famous Pazyryk, to nomad kilims of southern Persia, Parham searches for the origins of a simple ornamental frieze—one of the oldest decorations in textile art. Made of triangles placed side by side, it is traced back to the symbol for the mountain and for water.

One of the widely used designs in the nomadic and village weavings of Iran is composed of repetitive reciprocal triangles as a frieze, mainly occurring on the borders—almost inevitably on Lori and Bakhtiyari gabbehs—in a series of rows. It is intriguing that the earliest known Iranian rugs have identical rows of these frieze-type reciprocal triangles in a light and dark colour scheme...
